Although Mc, Murtry's unique focuses on Lonnie Bannon, Ravetch and Frank expanded Hud's character to the lead role. Ritt wanted Hud to be an antihero who did not regret his actions at the end of the movie. He was changed from Homer's stepson to his boy, and the character of Homer's other half was removed.

Ravetch and Frank accompanied Ritt and Newman through preproduction, casting, and promotion style. Ritt asked that the housemaid character (initially Halmea, a black female) be renamed Alma and played by a white starlet, due to the fact that he thought a relationship between Hud and a black lady would not work. According to Ravetch and Frank, "Neither American Western film nor American society was rather prepared for that back then".
